After 16 years of fasting and rigorous struggle, Irom Sharmila has finally decided to form a political party. She repudiated food and water 16 years ago when 10 civilians got killed unfortunately by army. She has been fighting to get AFSPA repealed thereafter.
I personally do not find logical to form a political party for this particular issue that too after 16 years. In 16 years of struggle she must be knowing what role a state government play in this regard. State legislature has a limited role when it comes to national security. Even if she becomes chief minister next year, how will she address this issue that too when she has no experience in the field?
In the given situation there are only two cases anyone can fight for. Either you fight against violation of human rights by army or fight against terrorism in the Naga hills region.
She is fighting for an unreasonable cause I suppose. Had one of those 10 been a terrorist and executed an undesirable incident , the same Irom Sharmila would have been among the first people to raise question like, "What was the army doing?"
Anyways, the extract of the news is that Indian politics is moving from Ideology, religion and community centric to Issue-centric ideologically uninfluenced politics. Parties are getting formed on regional but very crucial specific issues. Aam Aadmi Party is another example. Success and failure in getting objectives fulfilled is a different matter altogether.
It, however, raises the question on sustainability of these parties. Even if she succeed in repealing AFSPA from the state then what after that? How will this party sustain ? As the origin of the party is just an issue and not an eternal ideology or vision.
Manipur elections are coming with too many questions. Lets see what happens!
